Genetic Health Care - GP curriculum

Discussion Paper on competency mapping.

Introduction

In developing the capacity and capability for providing genetic-based health care in primary care, one way forward is to build on routine procedures and core skills already in existence in the general practice.

This paper sets out core roles for GPs in primary care and a map of what roles and competencies might be required to develop genetic health care in the community, together with the development and implementation support needed.

Core GP roles include:

bullet

generalist and holistic, comprehensive and continuing medical care

bullet

identifying illness

bullet

gate-keeping

bullet

co-ordinating long-term care for complex conditions

bullet

dealing with undifferentiated problems

bullet

providing continuing care

bullet

prevention

bullet

dealing with families and with psycho-social problems

bullet

enabling patient choice

All of these could be further developed to meet the needs of patients with genetic disease or anxieties about familial predispositions.

Relevant GP skills

bullet

recognising disease and its absence,

bullet

dealing with inchoate presentation

bullet

family history taking

bullet

undertaking appropriate investigations

bullet

managing uncertainty

bullet

clinical management of complex conditions including therapeutics

bullet
