New General Practice

GPs working in continually changing systems

GPs are now working in an increasingly complex and changing NHS and primary care can be seen to be changing at quite bewildering speeds. New GPs will need to be aware of this world, their role in it and that of others, and how they can best prepare themselves for this culture of change

bulletThe Registrar is willing to acknowledge and address his or her strengths and weaknesses, and can do so in an atmosphere of support that will promote effective personal development.
bulletThe Registrar will be able to critically analyse evidence, and have an understanding of evidence-based medicine.
bulletThe Registrar is able to review his or her professional work, and if indicated, initiate personal change.
bulletThe Registrar has skills to manage externally initiated change processes effectively.

The Registrar will be aware of their own responsibility for their learning, which will involve discovering and meeting their goals effectively.
The Registrar will have been enabled to understand any blocks to learning they have and will have had support to overcome these with a variety of teaching methods. In doing so, they will be able to form their Personal Development Plan, and engage in the process of lifelong learning.

bulletThe Registrar should have an understanding of the issues involved in successfully working in a team and of the different styles of leadership.
bulletThe Registrar will be aware, and respectful of, the contribution made by other professionals and workers in primary care, and will understand the workforce needs required to deliver health outcomes.
bulletIn respect of the stresses of general practice, the Registrar should know how to look after himself and those with whom he or she works.
bulletThe Registrar will understand the context in which general practice forms part of primary care, and will have an understanding of the roles of, and respect for, the other professionals with whom they will work. They will understand the organisations in which they will work, and the important outcomes for those organisations.
bulletThe Registrar will understand the career pathways available to him or her, and should be supported in making the most appropriate choice for their future at the end of their training.
