Vocational Training for General Practitioners: A Review of the Curriculum and its Assessment

TIMESCALE AND OUTPUTS

 Stage 1           Scoping exercise (Three months)

q       Begin review of UK literature and policy documents.

q       Review of current assessment methods.

q       Drafting instruments for data collection.

q       Pilot questionnaire for trainees.

q       Preliminary meetings with RCGP Education Network and others.

 

Outputs                       Draft literature review and analysis of data on pilot survey of trainees. Initial development of data collection instruments.

 

Stage 2           Initial review phase (Two months)

q       Extend literature review to international studies and policies.

q       Initial meetings with key personnel and organisations across the UK.

q       Begin visits to selected EU countries.

q       Begin process of matching assessment methods to likely learning outcomes.

q       Prepare questionnaires for postal surveys.

q       Distribute questionnaires to selected groups.

 

Outputs                       Extended draft of literature review and surveys undertaken.

 

Stage 3           First phase analysis (Four months)

q       Complete visits to selected EU countries.

q       Complete full draft of literature review.

q       Initial analysis of interview and survey data.

q       Identify principal findings of first phase of data collection and assessment review.

 

Outputs                       Interim Report, reflecting literature and initial analysis of interviews, surveys and reviews.

 

Stage 4           Consultation and analysis (Four months)

q       Integration of curriculum review and work on assessment.

q       Second round consultation with key organisations and individuals.

q       Further analysis and integration of data in the context of second round consultation.

q       Preparation of assessment instruments and methods.

 

Outputs                       Final Report.
